Castelnuovo Calcea is a town of ancient origins. The first inhabitants were the Ligurian Statielli, followed by the Celts and the Gauls. The name is of Roman origin and derives from the union between the denomination Castrum Novum and that ad calcarias, which can certainly be traced back to the presence of the nearby Roman road which often required backfilling work. After the Roman domination, the Longobards and then the Franks settled the area.
According to tradition, the original nucleus of the town, which was located on the hill and which currently houses the cemetery, was set on fire by Federico Barbarossa. Subsequently rebuilt in its present position, in the 1300s it became a possession of the Guttuari family from Asti. Before being ceded to the Savoy in 1735, the town was part of the Duchy of Milan.
Castelnuovo Calcea is located on the hills between the Tiglione and Nizza streams, 23 km from Asti and about 9 km from Nizza Monferrato. Castelnuovo Calcea is best known for being the birthplace of the poet Angelo Brofferio, who was born here in 1802. (Source: Wikipedia)
